The Mission

The precision your brief needs,
the depth only artists bring.

A cultural studio. With a long ambition.

"Two working artists. One workshop. No handover between the idea and what opens."

OCHRE WELD Studio begins with two forces. Ochre — the oldest pigment on earth, the first human mark, the colour of Australian country. Weld — the permanent joining of two things through heat and pressure until the seam becomes the strength.

Nick Leary's thirty years of shaping visual narratives that make brands felt — not just seen, fused with Dr Jason Christopher's three decades designing and building at the edge of what fabrication can achieve.

The studio works across two tracks simultaneously. Commercial commissions — brand experiences, spatial work, cultural installations for luxury, property, tourism and retail clients — deliver the capability and revenue that fund a larger ambition. That ambition is the creation of a new Australian cultural destination: a place where art, landscape, object, story and experience converge. The commercial work is where it starts.

Nick Leary and Jason Christopher

The People

Two founders.
Both working artists.

Most studios separate creative and production. Ochre Weld does not. Nick and Jason have each spent more than three decades developing a practice at the highest level — and have chosen to work together because the combination produces something neither could create alone.

Visual Author · Creative Director · Artist

Nick Leary

"Nick Leary's creative direction does not arrive as a strategy document. It arrives as a feeling — in a frame, in a colour temperature, in the way a person stands in a landscape. A Paspaley campaign does not need a caption. A Hamilton Island film does not need a voiceover. The image does the work."

Nick Leary is a Visual Author. That distinction matters. He doesn't photograph brands — he authors their visual voice. Thirty years developing a visual language that bypasses explanation and goes directly to emotion. The same uncompromising eye applied to fine art, luxury campaigns, film, and now physical space.

His practice rests on four qualities most creative directors have one or two of: cinematic storytelling, a deep personal commitment to Australian identity, film-grade craft, and — most importantly — the refusal to make work that is beautiful but hollow. The Paspaley campaigns feel like desire. Hamilton Island feels like a memory. That feeling is not accidental. It is the product.

Dr. Jason Christopher

"Three decades designing, creating and building things at the edge of what is physically possible. His practice moves between film production, gallery art, architecture and brand builds — the instinct is always the same: understand what an object means and build from there."

When Hollywood films needed physical builds that could withstand the scrutiny of a camera at close range, they called Jason. When Samsung needed a brand installation at architectural scale, they called Jason. When Torres Strait elder Dr Ken Thaiday Snr wanted to cross-culturally collaborate — enabling his ancient ceremonial objects to be reimagined and automated — he trusted Jason. That trust is not given to operators. It is given to artists who understand what things mean to the people they belong to.

The studio's Banksmeadow, Sydney workshop runs CNC, commercial 3D printing, and custom fabrication in-house. The person who reads your brief is the person who builds your activation.

The Cultural Proposition

the belief that runs beneath the work

Not an argument.
A romance.
The wild of this place.

Nick and Jason don't set out to make a point about Australia. They set out to feel it — and to understand the people who belong to it.

The hum of a city. The pearl beds of the Kimberley. A structure taking shape in a workshop before it ever meets the world.

They don't separate landscape from object, or idea from execution. The same instinct that reads a place is the one that shapes what is built within it.

That is why the work carries weight. That is why it stays with people.

The Romance

Nick's instinct is to find the feeling before the meaning. Three decades of work that moves people because it comes from a genuine connection to this country — its places, its stories, and the people who live within them. That is what brands like Paspaley return for. Not execution. The feeling that can't be briefed. You can't import it. You can't manufacture it. It either comes from somewhere real — or it doesn't come at all.

The Evolution

Jason's instinct is to find beauty in transformation — where idea becomes object, and object becomes experience. Three decades working across film, architecture, art, and fabrication — not because the categories are related, but because the instinct is the same: to understand what something is, and build it truthfully.

Not interpretation. Not decoration. Evolution.

The Shared Instinct

The refusal to make work that is beautiful but hollow. Nick brings it to every experience. Jason brings it to every object. An Ochre Weld activation should feel like something the audience carries with them long after the doors close. That is the only standard we work to.

This is what Australia feels like right now — wild, becoming, impossibly beautiful. Every brief we take starts here. Because the same instinct that finds the romance in a place finds it in a person, a product, a moment. That's what moves people. That's what we make.
